Take a stand for international family planning and reproductive health.

As Congress reconvenes after summer recess, we need to ensure that global health remains a top priority..

Before its break, Congress made significant progress on the 2010 foreign aid bill. Most notably:

  • The House approved $648.5 million for family planning, a $103.5 million increase over the 2009 level. The Senate Appropriations Committee approved $628.5 million for family planning, an $83.5 million increase.
  • Both the House and the Senate also called for increased funding for maternal and child health.
  • The Senate Appropriations Committee passed an amendment offered by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) to legislatively overturn the Global Gag Rule. The amendment seeks to prevent the back-and-forth over the Global Gag Rule that has occurred over the last 25 years, with successive presidents instating and then repealing the policy. This amendment would prevent a future president from reinstating the policy by executive order.

In the next few days, the full Senate will be taking up the budget as well as the Gag Rule amendment. Please take a moment to write a letter (below) to your senators asking them to support the spending increase, to get rid of the Gag Rule permanently, and take a stand for international family planning and reproductive health.

You can also help EngenderHealth ensure access to family planning and quality maternal health care with a donation.

Thank you!
